4th Grade Food Network

The 4th graders have just finished a very exciting project for their food unit.  They were asked to create a soup recipe for our version of "Food Network de Costa Rica."  We talked about how soup is a very popular food in Costa Rica and that it usually contains rice, meat and vegetables.  The students were paired up to create and act out their recipes (as if they were really on the Food Network).  For this project students needed to have a strong foundation of food vocabulary along with action words such as "cut" (corta), "mix" (mezcla), and "pon" (put).  I was so impressed by the work they did.  Check out the videos below!

3rd Grade Panama Canal

¡Buenos días!  This week the third graders concluded their "visit" to Panama.  In one of their last lessons, they learned all about the Panama Canal.  Ask your child to explain to you the importance of the canal.  Hopefully they will tell you it was constructed so that boats did not have to travel all the way around South America in order to get from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean (or vice versa).  In order to demonstrate their understanding, the students were given the opportunity to construct a model of the canal.  If you watch the video below, you will see them creating their masterpieces!

4th Grade Update

It has been a fantastic few weeks in 4th grade Spanish.  Over the last two weeks the students completed a mini unit on place setting vocabulary.  For example, they learned how to say words such as "plato" (plate), "vaso" (glass), "servilleta" (napkin).  They even got to make their own Spanish placemat.  They brought them home today ready to use for your Thanksgiving table or even your regular dinner table.  I asked the students to please send me a picture of them using the placemat so we can look at them together when they return from break.  You can send them to my email at  Don't forget to ask them to sing the vocabulary song that goes along with it too! 

The 4th graders also finished writing comics in google classroom.  In order help the students progress as writers, they were asked to create a dialogue.  The only requirement was to include the questions ¿Te gusta....? (Do you like....?) and ¿Qué te gusta más? (What do you like more?) somewhere in their conversation.  The end result was amazing!  Make sure to check it out below.

3rd Grade Panama Animals

The third graders are knee deep in their "trip" to Panama.  Recently, we have discussed the various types of animals that live there.  It was by far one of their favorite lessons.  We talked about how certain species of animals can only be found in Panama.  Later we discussed four animals that are very popular there (butterflies, armadillos, agoutis and sloths).  The students were challenged to choose one of these animals and claim them as their "new pet."  They had the opportunity to name the animal and type of up a description.  This was excellent practice of the phrase "se llama" (it's name is) which they learned previously in Spanish.  We also reviewed "es" (it is) and "tiene" (it has).  Some of them even went on to talk about their pet's personality.  Make sure to check it out below!

5th Grade Animal Projects

¡Buenas tardes!  The fifth graders just wrapped up their animal unit.  While they were sad to say goodbye to animals, they had a great time with the culminating project.  Each student had the opportunity to create their own pet!  They used google draw to create a pet they would describe to their classmates.  In their description the fifth graders were asked to include the pet's name, a description of the pet, where it lives, how it moves and any other interesting information.  We talked about how after 4.5 years of Spanish they should be pushing themselves to include past vocabulary in their descriptions and write more complex sentences.  I was absolutely amazed at the result!  As you read about your child's new pet you may find out about their personality, occupation, birthday, favorite food and even their favorite hobby.  Some of these students have quite the sense of humor!  We also talked about organizing their writing just like they do in English.  Check out the links below and have your child explain to you all about their new pet.

3rd Grade Community Projects

¡Hola!  It is my pleasure to share with you what our third graders have been working on in Spanish.  We are coming to the end of our community unit and the students have just finished a project where they were asked to write about where they go in the community and what they can or can't do there.  In this unit we concentrated on phrases such as "Voy a" (I'm going to ____) and "Puedo" (I can ____).  The third graders were then asked to take pictures of themselves acting out what they do in various places around the city.  Most of them even got up in front of their class on Friday to present their projects to their classmates.  It took a lot of courage and they were very proud of themselves!  Check out the links below to see your child's work.

4th grade Name Banners

It was an extremely exciting week in 4th grade Spanish.  Students were waiting patiently and have finally chosen their Spanish names!  To celebrate this occasion, each child went onto google classroom to make their own name banner.  On their banner, each student was asked to state their "new" name, birthday, age, favorite color, how many pets are in their family along with any other information about themselves.  Some of them even had time to decorate them with images representing their identity.  Check them out below to see how impressive their Spanish has become.  Have a great weekend!

4th Grade Food Activity

The 4th grade students have been practicing the phrases "Me gusta" (I like), "No me gusta" (I don't like), and "Me encanta" (I love).  For the following activity the fourth graders gave their opinion of two different foods and then their opinion of the two foods mixed together.   For example, they may have written "Me gusta pastel."  (I like cake).  "Me gustan zanahorias."  (I like carrots) "pero" (but) "Me encanta pastel de zanahorias."  (I love carrot cake).   Check out their work below!  Make sure to ask your child what food they mixed together.

4th Grade Menus


The 4th graders have been working hard on their food unit.  They finished learning the core vocabulary last week.  In order to use these words in context, the students were challenged to create a menu for their own restaurant!  They were so excited to come up with food choices for each meal on their menu.  Some of them even chose to offer combos or kids meals.  Their creativity continues to impress me on a daily basis.  The students used google classroom in order to create their masterpieces.  Check on the menus below!

3rd-5th Updates!

¡Buenos días!

We are off and running in all three grade levels.  It has been such a fun start to the year and there is so much still to come.

3rd grade:  Students in third grade Spanish have been working hard on their community unit.  They are learning how to say places around the community such as parque (park), gimnasio (gym) and piscina (pool).  We have been reading books, singing songs and playing games to help the students work on this vocabulary.  Third graders have also begun their "travels" to Panama.  On Friday, we listened to various music that is popular in Panama such as cumbia, salsa and reggae.  Of course we ended with a little Spanish dance party!

4th grade:  Fourth grade students are off to an incredible start on their food unit.  It was amazing to see how much food they already knew going into the unit.  It has been so much fun listening to them bring back old vocabulary into their conversations (such as kitchen, stove, oven etc).  Ask them about our food song we have been singing in class.  They'll probably tell you it is to the tune of Spongebob Square Pants!  Students in fourth grade also began their "travels" to Costa Rica.  On Friday, we talked about how "Costa Rica" means "Rich Coast" in English.  They are very excited to learn about the animals, nature and food in this gorgeous country!

5th grade:  Students in fifth grade are knee deep in their animal unit.  This has been another time where the students have had a lot of schema going into the unit already.  How fantastic!  We have been playing vocabulary games and reading books to work on their fluency skills as a Spanish reader. This past week, we read a book where the students listened to a description about an animal and then had to guess which one it was.  It was an excellent opportunity for work on comprehension skills and learn new vocabulary.  Fifth graders also began their unit on Spain.  They were excited to hear we are going to be "in" this country all year long!  We will "travel" to three different cities (Madrid, Barcelona and Seville).  It will be a chance for the students to learn about the incredible Spanish culture!

Welcome Back!

¡Buenos días!

It's hard to believe that tomorrow we will head back for the 2017-2018 school year!  My name is Lynsee Whitman and I will be your child's Spanish teacher this year.  I teach fourth, fifth and half of third grade (Carney and Shea) at Meadowbrook.  My colleague, Rachel Scherer, teaches first, second and the other half of third grade (Morrissey and Barus).

If you are new to the Northbrook School District here is a little information about our program. Students in first through fifth grade receive thirty minutes of Spanish a day.  We are an immersion program which means we speak 90% in Spanish and 10% in English.  Our program is primarily vocabulary based and our main goal is to help students feel comfortable learning Spanish and therefore grow a love for language learning.  While this may seem a bit overwhelming at first, you'll be surprised how quickly they pick-up the language.  There are also plenty of resources on my website and in the classroom to assist them in their Spanish journey.

This is our sixth year of the program and we are more excited than ever to come back with new activities and lessons to help your child love the Spanish language.  I will use this blog to provide you with updates on what is going on in Spanish class.  You will also be able to see pictures and watch videos of your students to see what amazing things they are doing throughout the year.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at

4th and 5th Update

5th grade: It's hard to believe the Spanish elementary program has been completely rolled out.  Your fifth graders are the first class of students who have gone through Spanish since they were in first grade.  It has been so much fun watching them grow and progress as language speakers.  Their final unit was "celebrities."  Within the unit, students learned how to describe themselves and others both with physical and personality characteristics.   To end the year, some classes were asked to research a celebrity and write about them.  Other classes were asked to "become" a celebrity and create a presentation (of their choice) about "themselves" for the class.  Both projects required students to state their celebrity's name, age, birthday, physical and personality traits, along with three interesting facts.  It was a great culmination of Spanish they have learned throughout the past five years.  The outcome was incredible!  You can see their growth by reading and watching their presentations below. 

4th grade:  One of the last assignments the fourth graders worked on was a culmination of calendar concepts we reviewed throughout the year.  The students were very excited to learn they were going to make their own June calendar in Spanish.  They were asked to include the month, year, season, date, and days of the week.  Then they got to personalize it!  Many included special days and events going on in their lives.  You can see their creativity below!

3rd Grade Daily Routine Videos

What a wonderful end of the year we are having in third grade Spanish.  Students just finished their daily routine unit with a culminating project.  Each student made a video to describe a typical day in their life.  Every third grader came up with two activities they do in the morning, two in the afternoon and two in the evening.  They had to state what the activity was, where they do that activity (to review our house unit) and at what time.  For example, "Por la mañana, me despierto a las siete y media en mi dormitorio (In the morning, I wake up at 7:30 in my room)."  They appeared to have a lot of fun acting out their schedules.  Take a look!

Cinco de Mayo- all grade levels!

At the beginning of the month, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Spanish class.  Each year, we highlight a different component of the holiday.  Third graders learned about the Mexican flag and how it is an important part of the festivities for Cinco de Mayo.  They had the opportunity to try their own "hand" at making a Mexican flag.  The 4th graders were taught about mariachi music.  We talked about the clothing of the band members, the instruments used and the idea behind mariachi.  They made their own mariachi musician!  The fifth graders learned about "papel picado" (an authentic Mexican decoration which translates to "punched paper" in English).  The students watched a video of an authentic papel picado artist and discussed the origin of the art.  In the pictures below you can see they made their own simplified version of Papel Picado.  ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

4th Grade Videos

4th grade students are working very hard on their hobby unit in Spanish.  They just completed a project where they were asked to come up with eight activities to go along with a certain situation. For example, some students chose eight activities to do "on a rainy day," or "when you are on vacation."  In order to prepare, we spent several days working on adding details to sentences in order to make our writing more interesting.  The students were able to decide how they wanted to present their activities to the class.  This year everyone chose either a skit, a google slides presentation or both!  Check out the videos below.  (If your child did a google slides presentation, you can ask them to sign into their account to take a closer look).  I was so impressed by their level of creativity and not to mention their Spanish!

5th Grade Animal Projects

To culminate their unit on animals, students in fifth grade completed an assignment called "Mi Mascota Nueva." (My New Pet).  The students were asked to design their own pet and describe it (such as where it lives, how it moves, the name, what type of animal it is etc).  They were then encouraged to continue their descriptions using as much Spanish as they could.  We had discussions regarding writing organization and the benefits of adding details to their sentences.  After their descriptions were written, we also took time in class to have conversations about their pet...all in Spanish of course!  The results were incredible!  This is the first class of students who have had Spanish since 1st grade.  It was so much fun to read about their pets and see how much language they have acquired.   Click on the links below to see your child's work.  Prepare to be amazed!

5th Grade Update

5th grade:  5th graders had a very busy few days last week!  They are currently learning about Barcelona, Spain.  Students found it very interesting to learn about Antoní Gaudí, a famous architect who is a large part of the architecture in Barcelona.  We discussed the Park Guell which was designed by Gaudí.  Students saw pictures of the mosaic sculptures and buildings within the park.  The fifth graders then had the opportunity to try their hands at "Mosaicos" (Mosaics) just like Gaudí.

4th/5th Update

4th Grade:  Fourth graders have been having a great time exploring their second country of the year, Argentina.  One of their favorite parts of the country so far has been exploring the district of "La Boca."  Students learned that the houses, stores and buildings in this area are colorful with various textures.  They were ecstatic when they found out they were going to make their own version of a neighborhood in "La Boca."  They spent a couple of days working very hard at their projects.  Take a look!

5th grade:  Students in 5th grade are deep in their unit on animals and descriptions.  Last week, they played their own version of the popular game "Hedbanz."  One student had to put an animal on their forehead (without knowing which animal it was).  This student then asked his/her group members questions about the animal until they were able to guess the correct animal.  They were asking questions such as, "¿Cómo es?" (What is the animal like?) "¿Cómo se mueve?" (How does the animal move?) and "¿Dónde vive?" (Where does the animal live?)  Here are some pictures of Mrs. White's class playing "Cintas" (Hedbanz).
