It was an exciting day in the Spanish classroom for 4th and 5th graders. To culminate their "visit" to Ecuador, students had a chance to learn about "mercados" (outside markets) that can be found around the country. Not only did students talk about popular items sold at mercados (clothing, jewelry, fruit etc), they also got a chance to learn about the wonderful world of bartering. I've never seen their faces light up so much as when they learned the price on the tag was negotiable. Here are some pictures of 5th graders taking part in an interactive mercado where they got to barter for a few of their favorite things. Don't worry, I made them promise the next time they were at Target they would not try to barter with the clerk!
